About the Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance
It's an oft-told tale in every tavern: a cadre of faceless overlords entice people with promises of support and success, then force their captured workers to submit to degrading baubles and exploitative practices. However, a band of dissidents will rise up and stand for the freedom of the workers.
This isn't a fantasy story. This is the story of the Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance, or SEIWA. Before its creation, wikis were being built on coporately-owned and run wikifarms. These platforms allowed for editors to create wikis for a variety of content for free. However, as time went by, policies would be created that would be forced upon the child wikis without discussion or feedback, largely for financial gain and often to the degredation of content.
The Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance was founded in 2011 with the departure of the Kingdom Hearts Wiki and Chrono Wiki from Wikia, along with the Dragon Quest Wiki. Since then, SEIWA has started two wikis: the Square Enix Wiki in February 2012 and the Final Fantasy Wiki in January 2020. In September 2024, SEIWA added a new member, The Wiki Ends With You, based on The World Ends With You series.
Our Mission
SEIWA strives to build and nurture a supportive community of high-quality wikis focused on Square Enix and its publicaions. In the process, we seek to promote long-held values that we believe are the best approach for fostering these kinds of sites:
- Quality: Wikis and their communities should be built around a focus of providing the highest-quality coverage possible of their topic, not as part of a money-generating machine. They should be run by those who are interested in the wiki's content rather than its potential ad revenue.
- Cooperation: Wikis should be run together with other fans, building communities that work together both within the fandom and with other fandoms. They should be a source of community and support within their respective fandoms and within SEIWA.
- Freedom: Wikis should be run by the fans that build their content, and should be free to be taken in any direction their writers and editors choose. They should not have changes dictated onto them that the community does not like or approve of.
We hope to help build a place that is both welcoming and supportive of quality and community-focused wikis, promoting each other and uniting others who agree with our beliefs while building the ultimate network of Square Enix content and communities. We hope you'll join us! You can check out our current members on the membership page or check out our requirements for joining SEIWA!
